WHAT IS TENS:
TENS is short for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. The T.E.N.S generates electrical impulses that are sent through electrodes placed over nerve centers. The various pulses employed by TENS can block pain signals normally sent to the brain through nerve fibers, thereby interrupting the brain's awareness of pain. The TENS may activate the release of endorphins. These are chemicals in the control system by the body to suppress pain naturally. It is no longer necessary for many people to endure chronic or constant pain. The use of TENS usually improves pain management significantly. TENS is safe, non-invasive, drug free, non addictive and has no side effects.
The TENS can reduce the need for pain narcotics and drugs. Federal law restricts these devices to sale by or on the order of a physician. TENS is a FDA regulated non-narcotic pain relief device.
HOW DOES TENS WORK:
TENS work by two different methods. High frequency TENS, is - based on the theory that continuous mild electrical activity blocks the pain signal travelling to the brain. If the pain signal does not get through to the brain, the pain is not "felt". The second way TENS work is by stimulating the body's own natural pain control mechanism. Low frequency or short bursts of electrical activity causes the body to release its own pain relieving substance, called endorphins.
HOW THE TENS PAIN CONTROL UNITS WORK:
Pain's is the body's warning system. It is a way of letting an individual knows that something is wrong.
TENS is a safe non-invasive drug free method of pain management. It relieves pain by sending small electrical impulses through electrodes placed on the skin to underlying nerve fibers. TENS is believed to work by two different mechanisms. First, electrical stimulation of the nerve fibers can block a pain signal from being carried to the brain. If the signal is blocked, pain is not perceived. Secondly, the body has its own mechanism for suppressing pain. It does this by releasing natural chemicals called endorphins in the brain which act as analgesics. TENS may activate this mechanism. By effectively managing pain without drug, TENS allows many people with chronic pain conditions to resume daily activity. You cannot strain or sprain your muscles by overworking them with your electronic muscle stimulator system because the feeling is more like a pleasant tingling sensation than a shock or jolt.

ABOUT FREQUENCY & MODE SELECTION
To select the frequency of the stimulation through push-
button 'freq' To select the modality which decides the distribution of impulses to patients.
PWM is useful to those patients who complain to feel a constant impulse.
SWEEP- this function serves the associated benefit of higher & lower frequencies.
BRUST- it generates frequency you select 7 sec on &7 sec off Useful when application of TENS is required for many hours.
START TREATMENT
Before Starting Timer Make Sure That The Intensity Is On '0' When The Electrodes Have Been Attached To The Skin, The Intensity Should Be Increased Slowly Tens Is Contraindicated For Patients With An On Demand Type Cardiac Pacemaker.
* Place the electrode on desired body area Select the treatment time by pressing Set button. After 5 seconds timer will start. Increase the intensity slowly.
CONTRA-INDICATIONS
If the client has been advised against normal exercise for medical reasons, The Client's own Doctor must always be consulted.
The Following should not use T.E.N.S.
If you are pregnant.
If you use pace maker.
If you have metal plates or pins
If you have diabetes
* If you have an abnormally high blood pressure.
* Unit must not to be used on any part of the body which is inflamed through disease or injury unless permitted by a doctor.

SHOULDER PAIN-ADHESIVE CAPSULITIS
OVERVIEW:
Condition causing pain and decreased ROM in the shoulder joint The Joint capsule is inflamed and poorly lubricated. It is often caused from shoulder surgery or a long history of shoulder pain that limited shoulder movement.
GOALS:
pain reduction
Increase ROM
CONSIDERATIONS:
This protocol may be used for other shoulder pain problems such as rotator cuff disorders. The electrode placement should be adjusted for maximum pain relief.
ELECTRODES:
Use four electrodes
LOW BACK PAIN OVERVIEW:
Low back pain caused by a soft tissue injury or by discogenic origin.
GOALS:
*Pain reduction
* Increased ROM
* Return to daily activities.
ELECTRODES:
* Use two or four electrodes as needed.
PLACEMENT OPTIONS:
* Option One (specific, locatized pain) 2 Channels: Set-up in a criss-cross pattern With the pain area in the center.
Note :Electrodes may also be placed with The Chi bilaterally above the pain level And Ch2 bilaterally below the pain level.

De Quervain's Disease
OVERVIEW:
Inflammation of the tendons in the thumb, specifically the policis brevis. Inflammation, pain and swelling may occur at the base of the thumb and wrist area. Radial Nerve entrapment may also be involved.
GOALS:
Pain reduction
Increased ROM
Increased grip Strength
ELECTRODES:
* Use two electrodes.
PLACEMENT OPTIONS:
Channel 1:
Place one electrode 8-10 cm (about 4") proximal to radial styloid Process.
This corresponds to the superficial radial and lateral cutaneous nerve.
Place the other electrode over the dorsal web space.
* Option One :
Channel1: Place one electrode over the deltoid insertion. Place the other Electrode over the dorsal web space.
Channel 2: Place electrodes anterior and posterior in the depression just below the acromion.
* Option Two (criss-cross) Bracket the shoulder joint in a criss-cross set-up. Adjust placement accordingly.
CONTROL SETTINGS:
Mode Normal or PWM
Rate : 80 Hz
Amplitude: Start at a low amlitude and gradually increase to a moderate level.
TREATMENT TIME:
1-2 hour on, ½ hour off throughout the day, as needed.
